Mona Shores - The Western Michigan Christian Warriors recorded a resounding 6-1 win against the Comets of Kalamazoo Christian Wednesday. The Warriors and Comets each entered the contest ranked in the initial top-10 list in Division 4 by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association, but the matchup proved to be one-sided from the start. It took WMC just over two minutes to net its first goal, and the Warriors were up 4-0 at the half. "We saw the benefit of playing a pretty grueling schedule to open our season tonight," WMC coach Ben Buursma said. "The boys were ready to make a statement on the field, and they showed what they can do when they are clicking. As a coaching staff, we're excited by the growth mindset and the camaraderie of this group." Tyson Annema got the Warriors started with a goal off a nifty pass from Juan DeJonge with 37:24 left in the first half. Carter Heimiller rattled the crossbar with a long-distance effort moments before Braedon Hoffman sent a looping cross over the defenders to Anderson Leffring, who nodded it home with nearly half an hour to play in the opening stanza. The Warriors' attack continued with Braiden Nordstrom cracking a strong shot that the Comets' 'keeper blocked. But Brady Evans pounced on the rebound and slotted his shot past a sliding defender and the diving goalie to make it 3-0. The final goal of the first half came after Heimiller's shot was blocked into the path of Leffring, who popped it toward the goal line where a defender unsuccessfully attempted to keep it out. The Warriors came out of half-time looking to build on the lead, and they did that just 4:13 into the second half. Heimiller's cross landed to Hudson Fair at the 6 yard box and he pounded it in. Kalamazoo Christian responded with its lone goal with 22 minutes left in the game. The Comets capitalized on a turnover near the top of the Warriors' 18, and the forward launched a high shot that Gavriel Modderman got his hands to, but couldn't quite keep out of the net. WMC capped the game's scoring late with Annema heading in a corner kick from Braeden Hoffman. The Warriors had a 19-2 shots-on-goal advantage. Colin Van Bruggen and Modderman split time in net, with Van Bruggen making one save. WMC (2-3-3) will travel to Covenant Christian on Tuesday.
