GRAND RAPIDS - Western Michigan Christian travelled to Covenant Christian for the first leg of a home-and-away series during the 2025 season and came away with a 3-1 win. The Warriors dominated possession throughout the first half and finally broke through with 11:35 of the first 40 minutes left on the clock. Carter Heimiller slotted a through ball up the center of the field to Tyson Annema, who beat the Chargers' keeper with a hard shot inside the right post. It was WMC's sixth shot on goal, and it looked like the floodgates had opened with that score. Just 1:42 later, Theo Buursma took the ball from the right wing into the Covenant penalty area and dropped it back to Hudson Fair. Fair blasted his one-time shot into the upper corner of the far side of the goal for a 2-0 lead. The lead would hold through halftime, but Covenant had a great opportunity off a counterattack that forced WMC goalie Colin Van Bruggen to come off his line and make a diving save. The Warriors continued to attack the Chargers' goal, and were rewarded with another score with 23 minutes remaining in the game. Annema headed in a corner kick from Braedon Hoffman to collect his brace on the evening and push the visitors' advantage to three. Covenant got on the scoreboard eight minutes from time, outpacing the Warrior defense on a counter. "Tonight was a good opportunity to play a quality opponent on the road and really take stock of where we are almost halfway through our regular season," WMC coach Ben Buursma said. "The guys did a lot of really good things—our possession was excellent; we created lots of scoring opportunities; the back line moved the ball well and covered each other. But there were definitely some areas for improvement, as well." The two teams will face off again in Norton Shores on September 27 during Warrior Weekend. WMC held an 11-9 shots-on-goal advantage over the Chargers. Van Bruggen made seven saves. The Warriors (3-3-3) are currently ranked #7 in Division 4. WMC will travel to Timothy Christian in Elmhurst, Illinois on Friday.
