NORTON SHORES - Western Michigan Christian finally found the breakthrough it had been pressing for all night, edging Whitehall 1-0 on Monday. The Warriors dominated possession and peppered the Vikings’ goal throughout the contest, but couldn’t beat the keeper for more than 70 minutes. WMC outshot Whitehall 14-3, with most attempts ending up safely in the keeper’s hands. The decisive moment came late in the second half when Mason Bonnema slipped a pass to Tyson Annema, who slotted the ball through the keeper’s legs from close range to give the Warriors the win. "This was a really good tune-up for us as the tournament approaches," WMC coach Ben Buursma said. "Our boys were challenged all night to try to figure out how to break down a tough defense and try to get quality shots. Instead of getting frustrated, they worked at it and worked at it and their perseverance paid off. We had an especially dominant run in the second half, and we're happy to get that win." Colin Van Bruggen stopped all three shots on goal that he faced to secure the shutout in goal for WMC. Whitehall's best chance to score came late in the first half, when a forward's shot slammed off the crossbar and back down into play, where the Warriors cleared it from danger. With the victory, WMC improves to 8-3-5 overall and extends its unbeaten run to 13 matches. The Warriors return to action Thursday at home against Ludington.
