NORTON SHORES - The Western Michigan Christian boys soccer team kept its hot streak alive Thursday night, taking down longtime rival Ludington 4-1 in their first meeting since 2021, back when both were part of the Lakes 8 Conference. With the win, the Warriors (9-3-5) stretched their unbeaten streak to 14 games. WMC wasted no time getting on the board. Just 85 seconds in, Carter Heimiller capitalized on a poor Ludington clearance, smashing a volley from the top of the 18 high and inside the far post to give the hosts the early advantage. The Warriors doubled the lead later in the first half when Tyson Annema calmly converted a penalty kick after the Orioles were whistled for a handball in the box. Despite the 2-0 halftime lead, the Warriors found themselves tested early in the second half. Ludington cut the margin to one when a rebound fell to forward Steel Stowe, who buried it from close range. That was as close as the Orioles would get, however. Annema answered with his second goal of the night, heading in a corner kick from Braedon Hoffman to restore WMC’s two-goal cushion. Mason Bonnema then put the finishing touch on the victory, cutting in from the left side and ripping a shot high into the near corner with 20 minutes remaining. "We talked at halftime about making sure to keep our focus and continue to move the ball around the field quickly," WMC coach Ben Buursma said. "It was disappointing to give up the goal right after halftime, but the boys responded the right way and made sure to quash any hopes of a comeback for Ludington. We are really looking forward to finishing the regular season strong." The Warriors controlled much of the play, outshooting Ludington 8-3 on frame. Keeper Colin Van Bruggen turned away two shots in the win. WMC now turns its attention to Saturday, when they host Covenant Christian as part of Warrior Weekend.
