The WMC cross country teams competed at the MHSAA Regional meet on Saturday. This meet serves as the qualifying meet to advance to the State Finals. The Girls team finished in 10th place overall with freshman Kyla Zuidema finishing first for the Warriors in a Personal Record time of 21:23, good for 22nd place. Leah Sneller was back in the line up for the first time in several weeks after battling a season-long injury and bravely raced her way to a time of 21:46 (31st place). Rochelle Liu came in close behind (21:47, 32nd place) followed by Evie Folkema (24:45, PR), Meredith Bonnema (25:40) and Addelyn Kingshott (28:21, PR). The Boys team settled for 6th place behind a solid race from Owen Sytsema who finished in the top 15 which automatically qualifies him for the MHSAA State Finals to be held on Nov. 1. Sytsema raced to an 11th place finish with a time of 17:06. Josiah Scholma narrowly missed qualifying as an individual with a time of 17:18. Reuben Anderson finished as the Warrior's 3rd runner (17:32), followed by Eli Morse (17:59) and Jack Walter (19:23, season best time). Micah Scholma (19:39) and Bash Navis (20:48) also competed at the Regional meet for WMC. While we had dreams of sending more athletes on to the State Finals next weekend, the teams overall had fantastic seasons! Both teams had to come into their own this year as graduation took a heavy toll on each squad. To even be in a position to dream of qualifying as a team was huge for the Boys team and they spent time ranked among the top 15 teams in the state throughout the season. Unfortunately, advancing as a team out of a very strong region proved to be too great a challenge. The Girls team was small but mighty with nearly constant improvement from week to week, which leaves much to be excited about for the future!
